He was an active sympathiser of Nazi Germany, and moved there after his release from prison in 1937; he became a naturalised German citizen in 1940. Before and during World War II, he made English-language propaganda radio broadcasts and became one of several broadcasters associated with the nickname Lord Haw-Haw.
