Captain Matthew Webb (1848–1883) was an English seaman, swimmer and stuntman who became the first recorded person to swim the English Channel without the use of artificial aids. Webb significantly increased the popularity of swimming in England. Webb was born in Dawley, Shropshire, to surgeon Dr. Matthew Webb and his wife Sarah Cartwright Webb.
