Willy Hartner was a German scientist and polymath.
He studied at Goethe University, Frankfurt am Main, where he obtained his PhD in physics in 1928 and where he later served as professor from 1940, as ordinary professor [German academic terminology] from 1946. In 1943, he founded the Institute for the History of Natural Sciences, today part of the Institute of Physics at the university.
Hartner received the George Sarton Medal in 1971. He was president of the Académie Internationale d'Histoire d
