He was the oldest son of Augustine Ulysses Machen, a government-employed civil engineer, and Agatha Kuyke of Werkendam, the Netherlands. His early education was by tutors. He also received art instruction from his uncle, C. W. Kuyke, a portrait painter in Arnhem.
