William Ely, was an English Roman Catholic divine. Ely, brother of Dr. Humphrey Ely, was born in Herefordshire, and educated at Brasenose College, Oxford. He graduated B.A. in 1546, and M.A. in 1549. In 1552 he was appointed one of the clerks of the market. When Thomas Cranmer was brought to the stake to be burnt at Oxford, he took leave of some of his friends standing by, and seeing Ely among them went to shake him by the hand, but the latter, drawing back, said it was not lawful to salute here
