text: William Ranulf Brock, FBA was a British historian of the United States. Brock was educated at Christ's Hospital and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he won the Thirlwall Prize. He was Professor of Modern History at the University of Glasgow from 1967 to 1981, and life fellow of Selwyn College, Cambridge, from 1947 to 2014. He was elected a fellow of the British Academy in 1990.
