As a commander, he managed a forced-labor camp Arbeitslager operated by the Todt organization in Nemyriv, Ukraine during World War II. At that time, Ukraine was part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), until it was occupied by the Germans. Ahrem received the title Righteous Among the Nations in 1965.
