Prior to the appointment of Mohammad Akhtar, the position was known as Chief of Staff. Before 1979, the post was referred to as the Deputy Chief of Air Staff and is usually held by an Air Marshal, a three-star rank air force officer, who is responsible for flight safety, intelligence, procurement, public relations, and the PAF Air War College
