Thurston was laid down under Maritime Commission contract as SS Delsantos on 9 December 1941 at Kearney, New Jersey, by the Federal Shipbuilding & Drydock Company, for the Mississippi Shipping Company; launched on 4 April 1942; and delivered on 11 July 1942.
