Henley was laid down on 21 July 1941 by Gulf Shipbuilding Corporation, Chickasaw, Ala.; launched on 15 November 1942, sponsored by Miss Shelah Keith Kane, great-great-great-granddaughter of Captain Henley; and commissioned on 2 February 1944.
