Named after Hunterdon County, New Jersey, she was the only U.S. Naval vessel to bear the name. USS LST-838 was laid down on 20 September 1944 at Ambridge, Pennsylvania by the American Bridge Company; launched on 8 November 1944; sponsored by Miss Margaret Foster; and commissioned on 4 Dec
