It was formally defined under the PhyloCode in 2024 as "the most inclusive clade containing Uruguaysuchus aznarezi but not Baurusuchus pachecoi, Peirosaurus torminni, Mahajangasuchus insignis, Notosuchus terrestris, and Crocodylus niloticus."
