Thomas Owen Beachcroft was born in Clifton, Bristol. His father, Richard, was a schoolmaster. Beachcroft graduated Balliol College, Oxford and moved to London, where he first went to work as a copywriter with the Paul E. Derrick Advertising Agency. He married Marjorie Taylor in 1926 and they had one daughter, Nina, who later became a writer of children's fantasy novels. Beachcroft began by writing poetry, which he shared with T. S.
