text: Thomas Bowes was an English translator. Bowes was educated at Clare College, Cambridge, graduating BA in 1579–80 and MA in 1583. He translated into English the first and second parts of the French Academy, a moral and philosophical treatise written by Peter of Primaudaye, a French writer of the late-16th century. The translation of the first part was published in 1586; it seemed to have met with immediate popularity, for a fifth edition was issued in 1614. Along with the third edition in 1594 wa
