The Effects of Intemperance is an oil-on-panel painting executed c.1663–1665 by the Dutch artist Jan Steen. It was bought by the National Gallery, London in 1977 and is still in its collection. The work depicts an issue which Steen addressed several times, that of the unfortunate consequences of excessive drinking. As keeper of a tavern himself he was well acquainted with the problem but chose to portray it in a light-hearted manner. In this case a wife and mother has fallen into a drunken sleep
