text: The tarada is a large canoe used by the Marsh Arabs with a long, tapered prow and stern that curve up from the waterline. It is 10–12 metres (33–39 ft) long and 1–1.5 metres (3.3–4.9 ft) wide at its widest point, though ones made for sheikhs could reach up to 13 metres (43 ft) long. It is traditionally made from wood or reeds coated in bitumen and held together with the help of iron nails. The wood used is typically acacia or mulberry. British explorer Wilfred Thesiger described them thus: Tarad
