Generally, tapering is done is to avoid or minimize withdrawal symptoms that arise from neurobiological adaptation to the drug. Prescribed psychotropic drugs that may require tapering due to this physical dependence include opioids, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, antipsychotics, anticonvulsants, and benzodiazepines.
