It is part of the family Syntrophomonadaceae based on comparative small-subunit (SSU) rRNA sequence analysis. This family currently contains three genera, Syntrophomonas, Syntrophospora, and Thermosyntropha, as well as two closely related isolates, strains FSM2 and FSS7.
