text: Stoke is the south west part of Ipswich, Suffolk, bounded by the River Orwell and Belstead Brook. To the west lie the Chantry estates. Stoke is associated with the coming of the railway and consequent industrialisation. Nowadays it is a suburb with many housing developments. The area nearest the town centre is popularly known as "Over Stoke". One former resident remembers it being referred to as "The Garden of Eden".
