Stephen McDannell Hillenburg was an American animator, writer, producer, director, voice actor, marine science educator, and entrepreneur. He was best known for creating the animated television series SpongeBob SquarePants for Nickelodeon in 1999. Serving as the showrunner for its first three seasons, and again from season nine until his death, the show has become the fifth-longest-running American animated series.
