text: SS Van Waerwijck was a passenger steamship that was launched in the Netherlands in 1909 and sunk in the Strait of Malacca in 1944. She spent most of her career with Koninklijke Paketvaart-Maatschappij, based in the Dutch East Indies. In the First World War the United Kingdom seized her under angary. In the Second World War she was sunk as a blockship, but later raised by Japan, who repaired her and renamed her 治菊丸, transcribed into the Latin alphabet as Harugiku Maru. She became a hell ship. In
