text: SS Fort Abitibi was a North Sands-type Fort ship of 7,125 GRT measuring 440.5 feet (134.3 m) long with a beam of 57.2 feet (17.4 m). Fort and Park ships were the Canadian equivalent of the American Liberty ships. All three shared a similar design by J.L. Thompson and Sons of Sunderland, England. Fort ships had a triple expansion steam engine and a single screw propeller. Fort Abitibi was built by Canadian Vickers Ltd., of Montreal. It was given Registry No.168825, and was delivered in May 1942
