In general relativity, spaghettification is the vertical stretching and horizontal contraction of objects entrained into a flow of space called a gravitational field. Stephen Hawking described the flight of a fictional astronaut who, passing within a black hole's event horizon, is "stretched like spaghetti" by the gravitational gradient from head to toe.
