In astrophysics, spaghettification is the vertical stretching and horizontal contraction of objects freefalling into a gravitational field. It is caused by tidal forces. The opposite effect is called pancaking. Stephen Hawking described the flight of a fictional astronaut who, passing within a black hole's event horizon, is "stretched like spaghetti" by the gravitational gradient from head to toe.
