In astrophysics, spaghettification is the vertical stretching and horizontal contraction of objects freefalling into a gravitational field. It is caused by tidal forces. The opposite effect is called pancaking and is experienced by objects accelerating out of a gravitational field, or, due do the equivalence principle, by the passengers of an airplane accelerating before its take-off.
