The store's name was a reference to the "Land of the Sky," a nickname for the city of Asheville that was popularized in the 20th century. Sky City was founded in 1962 by retail executive M.C. Peterson as an evolution of Bowers department stores, a regional chain founded in 1919 in Knoxville, T.N.
