He supported the Royalist cause during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, and was executed in 1658 for his part in a conspiracy to restore Charles II. His ‘Memoirs’, covering the years 1638 to 1648, were first published in 1806 and are a valuable first-hand source for the civil war period in northern Engla
