Sickle-gloss, or sickle sheen, is a silica residue that is found on blades such as sickles and scythes. When this is found on a blade, it suggests that the tool has been used to cut the stems of cereals, which are rich in silica. The "gloss" or residue occurs as a result of the abrasive action of silica, in both wild and cultivated stems of cereal grasses.
