Shaw Loo was the first Western-trained Burmese physician. He was the first Burmese student to study in the United States. He was the first Burmese to receive a Western medical degree, and Bucknell University awarded him an M.A. degree, making him the first Burmese to receive a post-graduate master's degree. Shaw Loo is regarded as the "father of modern medicine" in Myanmar.
