text: Serendipity is an unplanned fortunate discovery. In 1754 Horace Walpole coined the word and described an amazing discovery as being “of that kind which I call Serendipity.” Robert L. Merton revealed 1946 his concept of the “serendipity pattern” in empirical research, of observing an unanticipated, anomalous, and strategic datum, which becomes the occasion for developing a new theory.
