He also proposed the tail-contraction model of sol-gel based amoeboid locomotion. He served as a professor of zoology at Johns Hopkins University. Mast was born in Washtenaw County, Michigan to German immigrants Ferdinand Friedrich Gottlob and Beata Agnes née Staebler.
