Russian is one of the two official languages of Belarus. Due to its dominance in media, education, and other areas of public life, Russian is de facto the most widely spoken language in the country, a result of the Soviet period in its history and post-Soviet era development. However in the rural area, it is still not the main language, the mix between literary Belarusian and Russian - 'trasianka' is the most frequently used variation.
