It is a suffragan diocese in the ecclesiastical province of the metropolitan Archdiocese of Newark. The patrons of the diocese are Saint Patrick and John the Baptist. Its proper feasts are the Feast of St. Patrick, the Nativity of John the Baptist and the anniversary of the dedication of the cathedral church. As of 2023, the current bishop of Paterson is Kevin J. Sweeney
