The archdiocese heads the ecclesiastical province of Tarragona, having Metropolitan authority over the suffragan dioceses of Girona, Lleida, Solsona, Tortosa, Urgell and Vic. The archdiocese, created in Roman times, was reestablished in 1118 after the Muslim occupation.
