The diocese was erected on July 13, 1548, elevated to Archdiocese on January 26, 1863, and is the Metropolitan see of the suffragan sees of Aguascalientes, Autlán, Ciudad Guzmán, Colima, Jesús Maria del Nayar, San Juan de los Lagos and Tepic.
