Richard Yates was an American attorney and politician who served as the 13th Governor of Illinois from 1861 to 1865 during the American Civil War. He also represented the state in the United States House of Representatives from 1851 to 1855 and the United States Senate from 1865 to 1871. Yates is considered one of the most effective war governors and was nicknamed the "Soldiers' Friend".
