Born in Paddington, London, Maudslay was the son of Athol Edward Maudslay, "gentleman", and Kate, daughter of Sir Thomas Lucas, founder of a large firm of building contractors. Maudslay was educated at St David's School in Moffat, Scotland, followed by Marlborough College.
