The organisation was created in 2011 following a merger of Slovenská televízia with Slovenský rozhlas. It was headquartered in Bratislava. Like its two predecessor organisations - Slovenská televízia (STV) and Slovenský rozhlas (SRo), RTVS was a member of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
