Funded by the Forward Thrust initiatives in 1968, the pool construction was delayed for years over deliberations over funding and location. After ten houses adjacent to the McClure Middle School were purchased by the city recreation fund, local architect Benjamin F. McAdoo was selected to design the structure in 1974.
