In Japanese folklore, the Princess Shirataki lived either during the Heian period or the Nara period, and is said to have taught the people of what is now Kiryū, Gunma how to weave silk; the success of the silk industry in Kiryu is attributed to her, and their specialty fabric of kiryu brocade as well. She is sometimes said to be the daughter of Fujiwara no Toyonari, a Minister of the Right.
