For sponsorship purposes, it has been called the Castrol Game Changer of the Season since its introduction, starting in the 2021–22 season. In 2022, the Premier League Game Changer of the Season was first awarded, with İlkay Gündoğan of Manchester City being named the award's inaugural recipient.
