He received the medal for rescuing a wounded soldier on May 3, 1886. Clarke was the subject of art by Frederic Remington - "Lieutenant Powhatan H Clarke Tenth Cavalry" and "Soldiering in the Southwest–The Rescue of Corporal Scott".
