text: Portage is a community in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, located in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality on Cape Breton Island. This community is situated at the head of the East Bay of the Bras d'Or Lake, about 19 kilometres (12 mi) south-west of Sydney, and is named after the 3.5 kilometres (2 mi) portage that existed here between East Bay and Sydney River via Blacketts Lake, and so to Sydney Harbour and Spanish Bay.
