An early synthesis involve the combination of lithium pentamethylcyclopentadienide and titanium tetrachloride. The compound is an intermediate in the synthesis of decamethyltitanocene dichloride. In the presence of organoaluminium compounds and other additives, it catalyzes the polymerization of alkenes.
