text: Pablo González Casanova y del Valle was a Mexican lawyer, sociologist, and historian. He was awarded UNESCO's International José Martí Prize in 2003. González Casanova was born in Toluca, State of Mexico, in 1922. He took a degree in law at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and earned a master's degree in historical science at El Colegio de México. At the age of 28 he was awarded a doctorate in sociology by the Sorbonne. He served as rector of the UNAM from 1970 to 1972 and was
