There have been various proposals to link the city of Nelson to New Zealand’s South Island rail network, but none have come to fruition. Nelson was served by the Dun Mountain Railway, a mineral tramway that was also used by a horse tram between the city and its port, and by the Nelson Section, an isolated part of the government-owned railway between Nelson and Glenhope, which served several existing and developing communities in between.
