Nüshu is a syllabic script derived from Chinese characters that was used exclusively among ethnic Yao women in Jiangyong County in Hunan province of southern China for several centuries before almost going extinct. From the early 21st century there have been official efforts to revitalize the script, as well as indications of renewed interest among the wider public.
