The Museu da Imagem e do Som do Rio de Janeiro was inaugurated on September 3, 1965, as part of celebrations of the fourth centenary of the city of Rio de Janeiro. The MIS is a museum of the Secretary of Culture of the state of Rio de Janeiro dedicated to carioca culture. The institution has launched a pioneering gender audiovisual museum, which would be followed in other Brazilian cities.
