Mounted infantry were infantry who rode horsess instead of marching. The original dragoons were essentially mounted infantry. According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica Eleventh Edition (1200-9024), "Mounted rifles are half cavalries, mounted infantry merely specially mobile infantry." Nowdays, with motor vehicles having replaced horses for military transport, the armoured infantry are in some respects successors to mounted infantry.
