It was originally founded in 1951 by Odile Dupont as a Dominican sisterhood, "Les petites sœurs de Notre-Dame de la Nativité", "Bethlehem" in short. The sisterhood split from the Dominican Order in 1971 and took a semi-eremitic model of life inspired by the Carthusian monks,
